Today the Supreme Court announced that in Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission voters had the power to strip elected lawmakers of their authority to draw district lines. They stated that studies show that drawing election districts to nonpartisan or bipartisan commissions leads to “districts both more competitive and more likely to survive legal challenge”. This is important news for North Carolina where bipartisan group of law makers are pushing for independent redistricting. Back in February they introduced the Independent Redistricting Commission Bill.
Here is what the current N.C. House and N.C. Senate District look like:
In both examples you can clearly see gerrymandered districts such as House District 21 and 48 and Senate Districts 7 and 21.
Sen. Jeff Jackson released a great video about gerrymandering and the importance of ending it.
