Longtime Community Leaders Shirley and Al Whitesides Endorse Terry Van Duyn
Asheville, NC: Commissioner Al Whitesides became the first African-American elected to the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners in 2018. Along with his wife, Shirley, the Whitesides have been long involved in making Buncombe County and North Carolina a more inclusive place for everyone. Today, they are endorsing Senator Terry Van Duyn in her bid to become North Carolina’s next Lieutenant Governor.
In a joint statement Shirley and Commissioner Whitesides proclaimed, “We have known Terry for over twenty years, long before she was elected to the State Senate and long before Al became the first African-American ever elected to the the County Commission.” Their statement continued, “Our work with the Western North Carolina Community Foundation is how we met Terry. We were drawn to her ability to work with everyone, to listen, and to understand a situation. Those same abilities are what she took with her to Raleigh and the State Senate, and those abilities are why we feel she is the best woman for the job when it comes to being North Carolina’s next Lieutenant Governor.”
Senator Van Duyn has served in the General Assembly since 2014 and as Democratic Whip of the State Senate for two-terms. She has been a fighter for working families during her time in the state senate and is running to make sure all North Carolinians, both urban and rural, have a strong voice in Raleigh.
