The LONG Session is finally over and the first thing I want to do is thank each of you who emailed, called, liked a social media post or commented, wrote the editor or otherwise made your voice heard. I am so fortunate to represent a community that cares and I feel confident knowing you have my back and will speak out whenever you see injustice. Needless to say, we make an awesome team!
We accomplished a few remarkable things by standing together. We were able to stop last-minute legislation that would have stripped away local ordinances that protect people from discrimination and a bill that would have taken money away from public schools — giving it to charter schools.
What can we take away from this session?
We must restore education spending to pre-recession levels, our children deserve that. Education is the key to our ability to compete in an ever-changing business world. Instead, our Legislature has made per-student spending the lowest in the southeast.
The current Republican leadership continues to wage a war on the poor and middle class by adding more taxes to everyday services. At a time when many families are already strapped for cash, we need to invest in our families NOT continue to lift up the top 1%.
Finally, we need to protect our precious natural resources by investing in clean air and clean water initiatives. Pushing through greater environmental deregulation threatens not only our health, but our livelihoods. AND we need to support the solar industry, not kill solar tax credits that made North Carolina one of the top solar states in the country.
I will continue to stand up for the people of Buncombe County, fighting for your interests and values. Thanks for all of your support during this troubling session. It has been a genuine honor to stand with you. I can’t tell you what it means to me to know I can count on your support as we work together move North Carolina forward.
