June 2, 2016, Raleigh –
Today I asked for a moment of personal privilege to express the following message:
A dear friend of mine and friend of Buncombe County is gravely ill, and I would like to take a moment to honor his impact on me and on Buncombe County.
Don Locke is a true gentleman scholar, a retired professor at UNC Asheville, intrinsically involved in his community and a staunch advocate for justice.
He taught me an important lesson. It was at a lecture he was making to physicians about healthcare disparities. His message to the physicians is that is that if someone has been treated as second class all their life, they expect to be treated as second class.
If you want to help them, you need to first earn their trust, quite simply by asking them what they think is wrong. Whatever success I have representing my district, I owe to Don Locke.
